How to Replace an audi key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look replacement key for audi signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires audi key fob replacement cost. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of problems in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi spare key since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the audi car keys replacement 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.Nissan-New.png
